june 14 -- conference day 2

accidentally slept in this morning and missed a bunch of sessions. i took the canal streetcar down to the riverfront streetcar and made my way down to the convention center just in time for the jazzy networking lunch. people sat together with the people they knew and so i found a lot of clustering. after walking around with my plate for a while, i just finally sat down at the first friendly table i could see. it turns out that i found a group of military librarians. they were very nice and seem to love their jobs. one librarian said she had to be careful walking around NOLA because she worked in a particular institution (i've forgotten which, but wow). and everyone wished me luck when we parted ways. i eventually found ruth and sat with her for a bit.

after lunch, ruth, pavlinka and i walked over to the marriot across from the convention center to the PAM retreat. it was awesome. i met two lovely librarians and had a great chat with them (business card exchange!). even carol was there. we caught up and chatted about jove -- a new innovative thing dealing with teaching through videos.

PAMwide roundtable was interesting. i sat with the people in the discussion for library 2.0 successes. there were some really cool ideas passed around, like penny grants, kindles on loan, taking the library out of titles will draw people into the library, etc. of course we also covered ask-a-librarian, questionpoint, meebo, twitter, all your social media networking widgets. towards the end, every table presented a summary of their discussions.

pavlinka and i spent the break between sessions at the info-expo, checking out more booths and picking up more free stuff. i sat in a 10min presentation about graphene and got a free tshirt and bag from inspec. cool stuff! i also went around and got some other stuff too.

we went to paper presentation session with some interesting ideas about the future of science librarianship. there were 4 presentations and they're available through the scitech division.

then i attempted to get back to the hotel. i got on the shuttle bus to the sheraton and by the time we got there, it was pouring outside. lightning and thunder were right overhead. i was stuck at the sheraton so i figured i'd attend something going on there. i found an sla alumni and students connect session and was "adopted" by LSU. LIU wasnt present. in fact, only 4 schools were and they had some tasty snacks. i chatted with the dean of the LSU library school and a faculty member (tao?).

the PAM open house was also at the sheraton so conveniently i didn't have to go very far. i hung out with a bunch of PAM members -- ones i've met and haven't met before. there was some delicious food for dinner and an open bar and a coffee/dessert station! everything was great. conversation was great. i left with pavlinka a bit early so i could get back to the hotel and do hw that i forgot is due tomorrow.
---------------------------
one thing to note: explaining what i do is really a mouthful. haha. everytime someone asks me what i do or where i work, i have to explain that i'm a dual degree student doing a master's in math at NYU and a master's in library science in Long Island University's Palmer School. then they all stare at me in AWE cuz i'm obviously insane. lol. then they ask me what i want to do after. i thought it was obvious that with these particular two degrees, i'd work in an academic library, but people still seem surprised when i say either an academic library or for a change of pace, a medical library. some people also ask me how i get interested in the field and if i have to write a thesis for my program (and what my research would focus on ).

anyway, long day ahead tomorrow. gotta get to hw and sleeeep...
